What is mulch?

Mulch is a broad term that refers to any material that is applied to the surface area of soil. The use of mulch has many benefits to home and commercial lawn maintenance. Mulch can suppress weeds, retain moisture, increase soil fertility, regulate soil temperature, reduce erosion, protect plants and provide visual appeal.

What kinds of mulch are out there?

There are many types of mulch both organic and inorganic. Organic mulches eventually decompose. These include barks, straw, hay, cocoa shells, shredded wood, pine cones, compost, lawn trimmings, chopped leaves, and pine needles. Organic mulches are used for around plants and vegetation.

Inorganic mulches include river rock, pea gravel, lava rock, crushed rock and shredded rubber. These kinds of mulch do not break down or decompose. They are best for permanent landscape applications including rocks, paths and driveways.

How much mulch do I need?

The amount of mulch depends on the kind of mulch you are using. A rough calculation to determine how much you need is the square footage (length x width of area). Then add the mulch depth your space requires. Typically, you want mulch to be spread 2-3” deep.

What else do I need to know?

Keep in mind the importance of site prep before spreading your mulch. Rake your area to level the soil. Pull up any existing weeds. You may choose to lay down weed cloth or newspaper to help prevent weeds. Then spread your mulch in an even layer.
